Project on hold over the Christmas holidays until February
This video shows the 'Energy' of this group. Initially I was going to reshoot this for the Blog because they were a little silly. I decided not to redo this video in order to keep this as real as possible to show these students vibrant characters. I hope this new direction will help them engage and start to get on task.
THE NEW DIRECTION FOR THIS GROUP:
It seems we have a solution for the JAMES BOND group. They have asked if they can create an iBook to teach one of the girls original tunes. Next lesson I will get them to change their focus. I think their iBook will be more about how you can write a song with a few chords and then document the compositional process. This will probably be better for this group as it will, again, tap into their inbuilt 'oral' cultural traditions.
WILD THING: This group has just started the Design phase again as they have finally realised they need to use their own photos in the iBook.
HEAVEN: This group had an issue that someone had deleted their work sharing the computer. Students are going to start emailing photos to themselves and inserting them into the iBook
WALKING ON SUNSHINE: Collaboration issues in group. Designated organiser to delegate jobs as a 'shopping list'
MIRACLE: Up to recording and inserting video. This group started using iMovie for the first time today (ever) and have already started to learn how to Flip the video orientation and add text on the videos. By far, the fastest moving group.
GROUP 4 explains how they are using the iPad to Video their video demos of the James Bond theme for their iBook. I apoligise that the video cut out as I ran out of storage on my iPad.
Reflection: At this point with this particular group I realised they were losing engagement as they love to play in a certain style and essentially the 'music' was not engaging enough for them or tapping into their rich 'Polynesian' backgrounds. I feel I have them interested but will probably need to see if they would like to change song to something that they can associate with - even if it means that this group moves slightly away from the original task requirements.
Today we had 2 extra periods of iBooks with a smaller class. It gave us a great opportunity to get some serious work done.
GROUP 1: "Miracle" group
Group 1 is doing an iBook on 'How to play Cascada's 'Miracle'
This group are moving very fast and have even started creating their own Chord boxes. I asked them how they did it. I thought that they maybe used Microsoft 'Excel' or 'Publisher'. The girls said:
'We just opened that program there and started using the shapes tool'
Don't you love this generation?
Just open a program and start using it.
The program in question was SMART NOTEBOOK. The chord box and piano keyboard they created is on the right. How amazing? I reckon it would have taken me 2 hours to do that!
"iBooks are fun!"
VLOG: 1.1: MIRACLE: Below is a video of the girls explaining their iBook.
"WALKING ON SUNSHINE"
GROUP 2: "Sunshine" group
Group 2 is doing an iBook on 'How to play Katrina & the Waves song 'Walking on sunshine' - this tune introduces year 7 to chord I, IV and V in A Major. (A major, D Major and E Major) - it's a means to an end.
This group is also starting to move quite fast and have just started putting the book together. the Layout is coming along. I was asked if we can use the album cover art under 'copyright' and I said 'probably not'. We have decided to put it in for now. At least the students are now starting to get the idea of copyright and artists work.
VLOG: 1.2: SUNSHINE: Below is a video of one of the girls explaining the beginning layout of their iBook.
OTHER GROUPS - Most students on excursion
Other Groups had many students on excursion however, the Rug Rats group did some minor formatting exploration and working on rehearsing the music clips. The blog Boys were introduced to Weebly education http://students.weebly.com - I set up their logins and the decided to use the 'Blog Blocks' - The boys are going home to explore the website creation site using blocks.
WEEBLY EDUCATION is unblocked for DEC students using the address http://students.weebly.com however the teacher must log in through WEEBLY EDUCATION and set up the users and log ins. I have the PRO account that gives me 40 student accounts. One of the other Music teacher Mr Calder dropped in to help some of our students understand how to read chord boxes.
A few boys were getting a little jittery and frustrated and losing motivation. Only because they want to 'Jam' - something they do in the other 4 periods of music each week.
So I approached them to be the process collators and discovered 2 of them already Blog. The boys have dropped their project and have decided to split up and report back to Billy on the groups and their process.
This will be an interesting journey for them.
Next decision... BlogED or Weebly Students account - probably the later.
Some students are still using photos from Google images and editing them thinking that they are allowed to do that. I have told them several times and they are just starting to get it.
One group are teaching the song 'Walking on sunshine' - which in itself is a copyright issue and a reason we may not get the iBook on the appstore. The photo was a google image (RIGHT) and the student had edited with text.
"Is that your feet in that photo?"
Did you take that photo?"
"You can't use it"
"Do you take instagram photos?"
"Have you ever taken pictures on a Beach or in sunshine?"
"Why not use those?"
Awesome excitement followed. (I did mention that it should be appropriate photos and not include students in swim suits etc.) Students are going to bring some in after downloading them from the website http://web.stagram.com/
Probably time for a CREATIVE COMMONS CC talk
